As a distinctly practical discipline, Ethics and Moral Theology brings the faith of an individual to bear on concrete action in the world. Decision-making when faced with a particular situation is one aspect of Ethical and Moral Theology. Discernment is one of the most important elements in moral theological reflection. The process of discernment begins with the ability of the individual to identify the morally relevant information in a particular situation. In the field of ethics, these situations are called cases. During the ordination examination, examinees will be presented with case studies and asked for their ethical reflection on the case presented. The ability to distinguish morally relevant information within that case will be one element of the written reflection for which the Examining Chaplains will be looking.

In moral reflections, Chaplains will be looking for the following aspects of the case to be addressed:

1. Possible consequences of various courses of action. 2. Rules for decision making that might apply in this situation. 3. Other cases which might be relevant. 4. Considerations of character such as the virtues and/or vices which might be revealed or strengthened.

What resources from Holy Scripture and the Christian tradition might illuminate the moral dilemmas in which these actors find themselves? Remember to focus on moral reflection, not pastoral or other considerations.
