Understanding how the text has been transmitted and translated is important. The date of the text, the original language, and the text-critical history is necessary for good exegesis.

Gordon Fee and Mark Strauss, "How to Choose a Translation for All It's Worth" is a helpful introduction to bible translation, especially the various modern English translations.
